Failure . . . Is It A Blessing Or A Curse?
Failure . . . Just a seven letter word and yet it comes with so much baggage. There are so many reasons we fail to reach our goals and dreams. We rationalize why we can’t follow through with self-talk . . . “I can’t complete that workout.” or “It just doesn’t work for my body.” or “I can’t work and be a mom.” and so many other thoughts. We lose our motivation and all of a sudden we stop doing the actions that get us to the finish line. Sometimes we just fail at doing something because we don’t have the information or the skill needed to complete that action.
Unfortunately, so often failure can feel not only awful, but lonely. In this day of Social Media exhibitionism we often only see the highlight reel of everyone’s high points in their lives. What we don’t see is their failures. Why? We tend not to celebrate them. But what if we could look at failure in a new light? What if we could see the possible positive intentions that failure has in store for us? Hmmmm . . .
So failure . . . is it a blessing or a curse? Well, in some ways it’s both, but you get to choose. How? We get to choose the actions we take each and every day. When we fail at a diet plan or committing to a workout regimen, there might be a reason. So when that failure happens, it’s a chance to reflect on the process you followed, the actions you took and the results you got. This gives you the opportunity to recalibrate, set new goals, and make some tweaks to what you did last time to get new results the next time. What is it they say? “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” This is your chance to break the cycle and try something different, because trying new things changes the outcome.
Failure isn’t meant to stop us from completing our goals, it’s meant to drive us toward a new way or look at our path from a new perspective. I’ve worked with clients who have struggled to lose weight their entire life. They “failed” time and time again to do it on their own. But, that failure led them to working with a coach who could provide them with the right program, the right amount of support and accountability so they can get closer to reaching their health goals.
